Biggert-Waters Flood Insurance Reform Act of 2012 and Homeowner Flood Insurance Affordability Act of 2014
The Biggert-Waters Flood Insurance Reform Act of 2012 (BW-12) was signed into law by President Obama on July 6, 2012. On December 17, 2012, FEMA launched the Online Letter of Map Change (LOMC) - a new way to submit a request to change a property’s flood zone designation. The new Online LOMC application allows anyone to electronically submit required documents and property information when they are requesting FEMA remove their property from a Special Flood Hazard Area (SFHA). Floodplain Management Association Annual Conference, September 2013
FEMA Region 9 staff Ed Curtis, Edie Lohmann, and Shilpa Mulik were joined by the National Flood Determination Association and BakerAECOM staff to present a workshop titled 'Mitigation: the Key to Safe, Strong Communities' at the annual FMA conference in Anaheim, CA. This workshop was geared towards community officials and other stakeholders who are responsible for compliance with National Flood Insurance Program requirements and the potential challenges posed by map changes in their communities. FEMA's online resources and tools for mapping, floodplain managment, and insurance were presented and the session concluded with an open discussion on how to take the information presented back to communities to help create safer and stronger communities.
